Learning to Face Old Fears and Forgive

store robberyYes, that person mentioned in this article was ME! I will tell you that at 15 years old, this was probably one of the most terrifying days of my life.

I was working alone in my family’s convenience store in a small town in WI. One man came in and was masked, and I thought “oh no”. Then the next guy had no mask on so I thought “oh good”. Until, they asked me, or rather screamed at me to “open the cash register”.

I stared in disbelief and they screamed louder. I opened it and they told me to “get down on the ground”. I knelt down and that was not the right thing to do. “Get down flat”. Well, lying face down did not feel very safe to me with two huge men above me and I being a 15 year old female. I did what they said, they took all the money and as they left they said “you stay down there and count to 50”. Well, I did have some guts as I did immediately reach for the phone and call my mom. I then went and locked the door. I was in shock.

So many of us experience traumas, deaths, accidents that we do not always take the time to process or reflect on. Maybe these events even happened when we were children and we think they did not impact us (i.e. in the case of a death of sibling when we were consciously too young to remember), I am here to tell you that they do impact you.

In my new book, In Love With Me: 7 Self Love Strategies for Successful Partnerships, Parenting and Performance, I talk a lot about healing through the body. After events like these, as humans, we need to process. If you did not as a child, it can be very helpful to do this as an adult. Simply reflecting on how this impacted you can be healthy. I also did some EMDR work around this situation because it was healthy to really go back and reprogram what I felt. I really believe I lived in more fear for many years after that event in my life. When it happened, I did not even see a counselor or talk to anyone except the police.

Also, in all the forgiveness work I have done over the years, I had to forgive these two men for truly hurting me. They took my family’s money, they had no regard for me and they put me in a situation no 15 year old should have to be in. I forgave them. That forgiveness is for me. My new book has an entire chapter dedicated to forgiveness and how crucial it is in our lives.
